Beauregard

The construction of Fort Proctor began in 1850, due to hurricane damage and the outbreak of the Civil War, the structure was never completed. The fort, also known as “Beauregard’s Castle” for General P.G.T. Beauregard, was built strategically on the shore of Lake Borgne north of the mouth of Bayou Yscloskey. Coastal erosion has since cut the fort off from land access.

It is important to me that the viewer can see the direction of light in each of my photographs. I don't “paint with light” by moving the light around during the exposure. Instead, I hold a specific position for a time to reveal a clear direction and the falloff from highlight to shadow. In “Beauregard,” the main source of light comes from the right side, over the marsh grass. It hits the facade and creates a reflection, with the shadow falling to the left of the building. I directed my assistant Matt to drive behind the fort and cast his light, illuminating the depth of the structure and the tree growing on top of the central entrance.

New Orleans, like Fort Proctor, was settled along the Mississippi for its strategic transportation and military position. Hurricane damage, changing military strategy, and coastal flooding made the fort irrelevant. I made this photograph 10 years after Katrina, as the city continues to cope with the similar change agents of coastal erosion, flood waters, and the technological advancement of transportation.
