This photograph reflects the long history of rituals that have been performed in the swamp. In a way, the whole of New Orleans is swampland. Piece by piece, we’ve civilized spaces between the bayous and rivers. The disparate peoples that made this land their home brought rituals and religions to help sustain them. But this place is dark and treacherous. The candles reference the rituals, celebrations, and commemorations of the countless people who tried but could not survive in this inhospitable environment.
